Particulars: One of the four “LPC demos” recorded with Alain Lucchesi’s DAT machine, the resultant DAT master destroyed in his 1990 house fire. This made Medford’s standard cassette copy (which had been run-off from the DAT) the sole “master” of the four LPC demos, and this cassette has been used as the source here. Pretty Girl is a song which until this version only existed on several private live performance cassettes by the band Bad Habit. Medford lived downstairs from their lead guitarist, main songwriter and leader, Sal Carozzo, who put Medford into a support slot in front of Bad Habit at The Farm on 19 August 1983, which was Medford’s first-ever solo appearance in San Francisco, and a full fourteen months before the first Ophelias rehearsal. Pretty Girl was written by Bobby Shaw, one of Bad Habit’s lead vocalists (Carozzo being the other). Shaw was African-American, an alcoholic (and whatever else) and lived in San Francisco’s notorious Tenderloin. (Bad Habit lived down to their name, and, unfortunately neither Carozzo nor Shaw survived the 1990s.) Medford collected several cassettes of Bad Habit live performances and thought highly of several of their original songs. Oddly, it wasn’t until just after Edward Benton (ex-Bad Habit drummer and long-time Oaf) was replaced by Lucchesi that The Ophelias began playing Pretty Girl live during a May 1989 mini-tour of Southern and Central California. Medford wrote a new chorus hook and radically rearranged the song, and then Immerglück and the boys absolutely crush it on this demo made right after they returned from the tour.

lyrics

PRETTY GIRL

I was walkin’ down the street one day, yeah,
When I came across a girl I’d really like to meet.
She had hair hangin’ down to her waist, yeah,
She had a pretty face.
And so I asked her:
Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your name?
Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your game?
Baby, baby, baby, I haven’t seen you before, no no!
No, no, no, no-no-no-no-no!
Baby, baby, baby, baby!

The way she walked, it was oh so sweet!
You want to kiss her from her head to her feet!
The way she smiled across to me
Drive a poor man wild, yeah!
Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your name?
Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your game?
Baby, baby, baby, I haven’t seen you before, no, no!
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Baby, baby, baby. I haven’t seen you before, yeah!

Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your name?
Where you going?
Where you been?
Where you comin’ from and what’s your game?
Baby, baby, baby, I haven’t seen you before, no no!
Owwww!
No, no, (walk) no, no.
Where you going? Where you been?
Baby, baby, baby, I haven’t seen you before, no!
Baby, baby, baby, baby.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
